Series #3: How to Choose the Right Inlet Valve for Different Industries

In a screw air compressor, the Inlet Valve is a small component, but it plays an important role in controlling the amount of air entering the Air End. When the compressor is loaded, the inlet valve opens and allows air to enter the air end for compression. When the system pressure reaches the set point and the compressor enters unload mode, the inlet valve closes or reduces the air intake. Working together with the control system, the inlet valve helps the compressor adjust its operation according to actual air demand.

Simply put, the Air End compresses the air, while the Inlet Valve controls how much air enters the Air End. This means that although the inlet valve is a relatively small component, its control performance can affect the efficiency and stability of the compressor.

Different industries have different requirements for inlet air control. In machining, automotive parts, and other manufacturing industries, compressed air is usually needed continuously and steadily. These applications place more importance on the reliability of the inlet valve and stable load/unload control.

In electronics manufacturing and automated production lines, air demand may change more frequently. The compressor therefore needs to respond well to changes in demand, with the inlet control working properly with the motor, VSD system, and controller.

In food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, compressed air quality is also an important consideration. In these applications, the inlet valve should not be considered separately. The Air End, oil-air separation, filtration, and air treatment systems also need to be properly matched.

Packaging and textile industries may have more noticeable changes in air demand during different production stages. In these cases, suitable inlet control can help the compressor better match the changing air requirements.

Therefore, there is no single inlet valve configuration that is suitable for every application. Pressure, air demand, load changes, operating hours, and working conditions can all affect the final selection.

At Dawos, we consider the customer’s actual operating conditions when configuring a compressor solution. The Air End, Inlet Valve, oil-air separation, cooling, and control systems are selected as a complete system to provide a suitable screw air compressor solution for different applications.
