In an oil-injected screw air compressor, lubricating oil is injected into the airend to cool,
lubricate, and seal the rotors during compression. As a result, the compressed air leaving the airend contains a
mixture of compressed air and oil. The oil-air separation system is responsible for separating most of this oil and
returning it to the oil circulation system, while allowing the compressed air to continue to the downstream system.

 

Oil-Air Separation Tank and Separator Element

 

The oil-air separation system is not simply one filter. It normally consists of a
separator tank (or separator vessel) and an oil separator element, together with
the related oil return system.

First, the oil-air mixture from the airend enters the separator tank. By reducing flow velocity
and changing the flow direction, a large portion of the oil is separated from the compressed air and collected in
the tank.

The compressed air then passes through the oil separator element inside the
separator vessel. The separator element captures fine oil droplets and coalesces them into larger droplets, which
are returned to the oil circuit. The separated compressed air then continues through the compressor’s downstream
components.

This distinction is important: the separator tank is the larger pressure
vessel
, while the separator element is the replaceable separation cartridge installed inside
it
. Together, they form the core of the oil-air separation system.

 

Why Is the Oil-Air Separation System Important?

A well-designed oil-air separation system provides several important benefits.

1. Lower Oil Carryover

Effective separation reduces the amount of lubricating oil carried out with the compressed air.
This helps protect downstream air treatment equipment and reduces unnecessary oil consumption.

2. Controlled Pressure Loss

The oil separator element needs to provide efficient separation while maintaining reasonable
pressure drop. Excessive pressure loss can increase the energy required to produce compressed air, so separator
design and condition are important to overall compressor efficiency.

3. Efficient Oil Recovery

The separated oil is returned to the compressor oil circuit rather than being continuously
discharged with the compressed air. This supports stable lubrication, cooling, and sealing performance inside the
airend.

4. Reliable Long-Term Operation

The separator element is a service component. As it becomes loaded with contaminants or its
separation performance changes, pressure drop and oil carryover can increase. Regular inspection and replacement
according to the compressor manufacturer’s maintenance requirements help maintain stable performance.

 

Application Value in Different Industries

For food packaging and pharmaceutical production, controlling oil carryover is
important because compressed air can come into contact with sensitive production processes.

For electronics and precision manufacturing, stable compressed air quality
helps protect downstream equipment and production processes.

For textiles, chemicals, metal processing, and other industrial applications,
efficient oil-air separation supports continuous operation while helping control lubricant consumption and
maintenance costs.

For this reason, the oil-air separation system is much more than a simple filter. It is an
important part of the compressor’s internal air and oil circulation system.

 

A reliable screw air compressor needs the separator tank, oil separator
element, oil return system, and related pressure-control components to work together correctly.
